M48A2 caseless

The M48A2 is an updated version of the M48A1. It offers the same performance as the original M-48, but has many of the problems of its predecessor fixed, heat being one of them. Because it's a caseless rifle, it heats up extremely fast. this wasn't a problem with the original until soldiers on the field reported that the heat being produced by the rifle was so intense, it melted the circuitry and wiring of the built in flashlight and mounted IR laser, along with uncomfortably heating the grips. They also reported burns and the ability to fry egg's on spent mags after immediate use. To fix this designers opened the rail system to air cool the barrel along with encasing the rear of the barrel with a heat sink barrel containing an experimental gel called aero-gel. It's a lighter then air gel with air pockets. The gel itself is able to absorb heat and dissipate it and is cooled to low temperatures by a small cooling unit in the pistol grip and stock.

Compared to the A1 the M48A2 is 4 inches shorter and slightly cheaper to produce.
